The first BD-ROM players were shipped in the mid June 2006, although HD DVD players beat them in the market for several months.

The first batch of Blu-ray titles were released on June 20, 2006. The earliest releases used MPEG-2 of video compression, the same way DVDs were issued. The first version using the new VC-1 decoder briefed, AVC in September 2006. The first movies using dual layer discs (50GB) were introduced in October 2006. The first audio-only release was made in March 2008.

The first Blu-ray disc drive, focuses on the BWU-100A PC by Sony Corporation on July 18, 2006. It records both single-layer and double-layer BD-R and BD-RE discs, with the suggesting price of $699.
